Ronny Zimmermann successfully defended his PhD thesis!

Research focused on “Computer-Aided Catalyst Pellet Design for Load-Flexible Fixed-Bed Reactor Operation”

March 19, 2024

Ronny Zimmermann started his journey within the IMPRS programme on May 3, 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Kai Sundmacher and his mentor, Prof. Jens Bremer. On January 18, 2024, he successfully defended his PhD thesis on “Computer-Aided Catalyst Pellet Design for Load-Flexible Fixed-Bed Reactor Operation” with ‘summa cum laude’.

Ronny Zimmermann's doctoral research addressed the complex challenge of storing excess renewable energy in methane, known as the power-to-methane process. The research focused on the design of the catalyst pellets that convert hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane in the fixed bed reactors used. His innovative approach used core-shell catalyst pellets to regulate pronounced temperature fluctuations during load-flexible operation, enabling efficient large-scale methane production.

Zimmermann acknowledges the pivotal role of the IMPRS programme in shaping his interdisciplinary interactions and honing his presentation skills. Through engaging conversations and collaborative presentations, he gained insights into placing his research in a broader context and improved his presentation skills. Attending summer schools and conferences proved to be additional highlights, providing unexpected opportunities and fostering a sense of community among fellow PhD students, enriching his academic journey.

Reflecting on his experiences, Ronny Zimmermann offers valuable advice to future PhD students on the programme. He encourages them to seize opportunities, attend regular meetings, get involved in activities and network with fellow researchers. He stresses the importance of asking for guidance when needed, sharing work, and engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations to inspire unexpected insights.

Looking to the future, he plans to apply the skills and knowledge gained during his PhD studies to his career and research endeavours, striving to use critical thinking, adaptability and confidence to tackle complex challenges. Whether in academia or industry, he aims to bring interdisciplinary perspectives and a collaborative approach to his work and make a meaningful contribution to research and innovation in his field.

In celebrating Zimmermann's remarkable achievement, it is evident that his journey has equipped him with the requisite determination and resilience for future endeavours. He expresses his heartfelt gratitude to the IMPRS program for its invaluable contributions to his growth and development, underscoring its pivotal role in shaping his academic trajectory.
