Title: Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent flows in real processes

Abstract:

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) consist in obtaining numerically a direct and „exact" solution of the Navier-Stokes equations involving all relevant physico-chemical scales in space and time. This is currently the only approach delivering an accurate picture of turbulent coupling processes, since no approximate model is available yet, in spite of more than 100 years of research on this topic. This is why DNS are sometimes also called „Numerical Experiments“. However, DNS lead to huge computational requirements. For this reason, extreme simplifications were necessary in the past to enable such studies. Typically, periodic cubic domains of a few cubic millimetres could be computed; but this is far from any real process of interest... Purpose of the presentation is to show how recent progress in algorithms and computer architectures now progressively enable DNS studies of real, relevant processes, providing selected examples.
