Main Focus

Dr. Caroline Ganzer is a team leader and postdoctoral researcher in the process systems engineering (PSE) group at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg. Her research centers around sustainable energy systems and fuels, decarbonization of the industrial sector, and circular economy. She uses mathematical modelling and optimization to design and analyze technologically feasible, economically viable, and socially beneficial systems with net zero CO2 emissions.

Education

Dr. Ganzer earned her PhD from 2018-2022 at the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering and the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. Her research was focused on modelling the decarbonization of power and industry, assessing the value of key technologies, various mitigation pathways, and the impact of policy incentives. Her PhD was supervised by Prof. Niall Mac Dowell and sponsored by TotalEnergies.

She holds a MSc in Advanced Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London (2018) and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University (2017). She studied abroad at Carnegie Mellon University from 2015-2016 via a cooperation of the PSE institutes at RWTH Aachen (AVT.SVT) and CMU (CAPD).

Awards

She was awarded the Geoff Hewitt Prize by the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College for the best overall performance of all MSc students. The German academic scholarship foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) awarded her a fellowship in 2014-2018 and a study abroad scholarship for 2017/18. She was elected academic representative by the MSc class, advocating for the interests of ~110 fellow students. For her stay at CMU, she received the International Study and Training (ISAP) scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She gratefully acknowledges the support throughout her academic career.

Professional experience

From 2018-2020, Caroline Ganzer was active as a consultant to the public and private sector and affiliated with Imperial College Consultants. She interned at BASF in Shanghai in 2016, and was employed as a student research assistant at the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen from 2014-2015.
