Project "Optimal Damping of Vibrating Systems" funded by the Zeidler-Forschungs-Stiftung

January 14, 2014
In real physical systems, which possess elasticity and mass, dangerous vibrations are a typical phenomenon. For the majority of engineering applications, resonance and sustained oscillations can cause structural damage. The way to reduce that is through damping. Prof. Dr. Peter Benner's research group and a team from the University of Osijek (Croatia) are devoted to optimization of damping of vibrating systems. The Zeidler-Forschungs-Stiftung supports their research with € 50,000. [more]

MoreSim4Nano: Fast Simulations for tomorrow's computers

December 04, 2013
If you shoot a picture with a camera, the image usually will be saved as jpg. Because of compression not every pixel is saved, only the most important features of the image will be stored to save storage space. Mathematicians within the joint research project MoreSim4Nano funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research try to achieve a similar result for physical and technical processes: to extract and save the most important features for a faster simulation. This practice is applied to a lot of disciplines in engineering and natural sciences. [more]

InPROMPT: Minimizing the loss of valuable substances in chemical processes

November 27, 2013
MPI Magdeburg's special research field InPROMPT will be funded for four more years promoted by the German Research Community (DFG). The aim of this project is to minimize loss of valuable substances in chemical processes. In addition to the partners of the first funding period (TU Berlin, TU Dortmund and the University of Magdeburg) the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg is now involved with its own particular project.
