How to come effectively from plant-based materials to pharmaceuticals, food additives and bioplastics?
A variety of substances that are relevant, for example, in the production of pharmaceuticals, are derived from plant-based raw materials. The scientists at the Max Planck Institute will introduce you to how high-purity fine chemicals can be obtained from plant material, such as the annual mugwort or the root of the turmeric plant, for use in medicines, food additives, and color pigments. To achieve this, first, an extract containing the target product along with other plant components will be produced. This extract is usually a highly complex mixture of many substances, and processing it into a pharmaceutical active ingredient involves various elaborate separation processes. In our laboratory of the pilot plant hall, we provide an insight into the equipment we use for extraction, as well as for obtaining target products through crystallization and chromatography.
