The first f(A)bulous Workshop on Matrix Functions and Exponential Integrators will be held at MPI Magdeburg from Monday, September 25 to Friday, September 27, 2023.

Aims and Scope:

Reproducibility in mathematics and scientific computing has been gaining much attention lately, thanks in part to the dissemination of FAIR princples. In numerical analysis, whether research results can be regenerated depends largely on the availability of the code implementing algorithms and access to publicly available data sets. With this workshop, we aim to establish an initial benchmark collection and standards for key problems in matrix functions acting on vectors and exponential integrators, two highly active fields with overlapping interests, algorithms, and challenges. We also aim to encourage discussion among researchers from diverse theoretical and applied backgrounds, to help identify open questions and key directions for the future of these fields.
The workshop will feature plenary lectures by experts in f(A)b and exponential integrators, as well as ample discussion sessions, in a non-traditional format. Contributions from early career researchers will also be welcome.
Topics / keywords:
  • Matrix function times a vector (f(A)b), especially where f is the exponential, logarithm, signum, trigonometric functions, or fractional powers
  • Challenging data pairs (A,b) for both f(A)b and exponential integrators
  • trace(f(A))
  • moments: b*f(A)b
  • high-performance, highly parallelized, and energy-efficient methods for the above problems
