Paths to biological polymers:an insight from virus infections and the chemical origins of life


The synthesis of biological polymers, such as proteins in a living cell, is a process that has been highly evolved and optimized over 3.5 billion years of prebiotic and biological evolution on Earth. What relationship does protein synthesis in living cells have to de novo synthesis of the first proteins that preceded the emergence of life? In this talk we will share mathematical/computational modeling and wet-lab experiments on virus growth and prebiotic chemistry to highlight a common often overlooked feature: the critical role of environment.
