Annual Review of 2023

The year 2023 at the IMPRS

December 31, 2023

As we bid farewell to the year 2023, it is a fitting time to reflect on the significant achievements we have accomplished and anticipate the prospects for the International Max Planck Research School in the upcoming year.

Welcoming New PhDs to IMPRS

We are happy to extend a warm welcome to two new researchers, Kasimhussen Vhora and Jasmin Bauer, who have begun their journey as PhD researchers. We are excited to support them in their academic pursuits in the coming years.

Celebrating Successful PhD Defences

We are pleased to announce the successful defence of PhD theses by a distinguished group of PhD students. Susann Triemer, Stefanie Duvigneau, Karsten Hans Georg Rätze, Moritz Schulze, Kirandeep Kour, Sebastián Espinel Ríos, and Bruno Morabito have all successfully defended their PhD thesis. It has been a privilege to provide assistance to them in their pursuit of obtaining their doctoral degrees.

Embarking on Research Journeys

This year, PhDs such as Zunain Ayaz, Sebastián Espinel Ríos, and Edgar Iván Sánchez Medina embarked on educational stays to locations such as Bergen, Norway, Princeton University in New Jersey, USA, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. We hope that these experiences have a lasting impact on their future careers, enriching their academic perspectives.

IMPRS Seminars and Dialogues

We extend our gratitude to all professors, PhDs, and alumni who actively participated in IMPRS seminars and dialogues throughout the year. These events have served as invaluable platforms for researchers to exchange insights, share current findings, and discuss challenges.

IMPRS Workshop 2023

The annual IMPRS Workshop took place in the beautiful city of Naumburg (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt. PhD students and professors came together from March 12 to 14, 2023, engaging in scientific exchange, social activities, and presentations of recent research developments. The workshop served as a platform for building networks, sharing progress, and establishing friendships within the IMPRS.

IMPRS Summer School 2023

Every two years, the IMPRS ProEng hosts a summer school. This year's focus was on Sustainable Energy Systems, a topic of growing importance in today's world. Scientists from various disciplines gathered in Magdeburg for a week of lectures, tutorials, and engaging discussions with experts. The summer school provided a platform for researchers to explore challenges and build connections while also enjoying social activities like a canoe tour on the Elbe, a dinner, and a guided city tour.

Outlook for 2024

The IMPRS call, postponed from the end of 2023, is expected to take place at the end of January/beginning of February 2024. We look forward to promising applicants.
The IMPRS Workshop 2024 is scheduled for April, promising another exciting gathering.
Finally, the upcoming year holds the prospect of numerous PhD defences, skill courses, and seminars, and we are excited to support our PhDs in their pursuit of their doctoral degree.

We wish you all a wonderful year 2024 and are eagerly awaiting the next year!
