MPI Colloquia Series: Optimal control of wave-type solutions of the Nagumo and FitzHugh-Nagumo equation
This presentation is part of the MPI Magdeburg colloquium series and is jointly organized with the Faculty of Mathematics at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Everyone interested in this presentation is very warmly invited to come.

Wave type solutions are characteristic for several nonlinear parabolic reaction diffusion equations. For instance, traveling wave fronts solve the Nagumo equation, while spiral waves are solutions to the well-known FitzHugh-Nagumo equations. In its main part, the talk surveys results on associated optimal control problems. In particular, theory and numerical applications of sparse optimal controls are discussed. Here, the objective functional includes a non-differentiable convex part. Finally, a problem of feedback control is briefly sketched, where nonlocal feedback operators with time-delay have to be designed in an optimal way. The theory will be illustrated by various numerical examples.
