Toward a more sustainable chemical industry: terpenes and arylpropenoids as feedstock in transition metal complex catalyzed reactions

The lecture will focus three points:
i) terpenes and arylpropenoids as sustainable chemical feedstock;

ii) transition metal complexes (TMC) as catalysts for the transformation of these feedstock;

iii) strategies to make easier the recycling of TMC catalysts.

In our research, we employ terpenes and arylpropenoids as starting materials to produce potentially useful or “drop in” fine chemicals employing catalysis by transition metal complexes (TMC).[1, 2]

The use of classic TMC-catalyzed reactions such as hydroformylation, hydroaminomethylation, or C-C double-bond metathesis to natural products is not straightforward. Some examples of successful application of these strategies will be presented.

TMC-catalysis is usually employed in homogeneous phase, and the separation between the catalyst and products is done by distillation, which introduces various drawbacks. Supporting the TMC in a different phase makes possible the catalyst recovery before distillation and some of these strategies will be presented.
