Job Code: PD-glyx-032023MPI
Job offer from March 09, 2023
A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg in the Bio/Process Analytics team of Dr. Erdmann Rapp (Department of Bioprocess Engineering Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Reichl) on the topic „Glycomics and Glycoproteomics“. The full-time position is supposed to start in April 2023 or later.
Topic and position
Glycosylation is an important modification of proteins and is involved in the regulation of the biological activity and stability of many proteins. Notably, the glycosylation of many eukaryotic proteins appears to be highly regulated and minor structural changes of the glycan portions may lead to major changes in function. Therefore, protein glycosylation analysis is becoming increasingly important in medical/clinical, biopharmaceutical, as well as biotechnological research.
As a PostDoc of the Bio/Process Analytics team you will join a multidisciplinary group working on the deeper understanding of bio(techno)logical processes on the molecular level developing and using proteomic, glycoproteomic and glycomic tools. You will have project and personnel responsibilities to develop and improve cutting edge methods for analysis of protein glycosylation. With a particular focus on glycobiotechnology, you will apply these methods for studying protein glycosylation, unraveling the protein glycosylation process with respect to its understanding and optimization.
Institute
The MPI Magdeburg was the first institute of the Max Planck Society dedicated to the engineering sciences. It is supposed to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial applications. The neighborhood to the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and its engineering and medical faculties offers excellent cooperation possibilities. Its main research activities are focused on the analysis, design and control of processes in chemical and bioengineering. Scientists of different disciplines like engineering, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer sciences add their specific knowledge to the research work, thereby developing new methods and tools for tackling problems in a wide range of application areas.
Your profile
We are looking for outstanding young international and German scientists. You hold a recent PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology or biomedical sciences with an excellent university degree. You have substantial practical experience with bio-analytical techniques such as U/HPLC, CE and mass spectrometry with respect to glycomics/glycoproteomics, and experience in glycobiotechnology/glycobiology. You have the willingness to take on project and personnel responsibility. Therefore, very good communication skills in both written and spoken English are essential. This also applies to your motivation and scientific curiosity, and an independent working style with efficient self-management.
We offer
- Active participation in ongoing and new research projects
- Cutting edge laboratories and instrumentation
- Three year contract
- Collaboration in a friendly, international und interdisciplinary team
- Positive and motivating working atmosphere
- Individual development and training opportunities
- Excellent support from our senior staff
- Involvement in lecturing and/or tutoring at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg
