The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, research group Data-driven Model Reduction for Stochastic Systems, invites applications for a PhD student position (m/f/d). Subject of the work is the research project on “Data-driven model reduction of stochastic dynamical systems”.

The newly established research group of Dr. Feliks Nüske is focused on the development of novel data-based methods for the identification, analysis, and control of dynamical systems. Our main interest is to combine tools from a broad variety of fields, including machine learning, numerical analysis, and partial differential equations, to design robust and scalable data-analysis techniques which can be applied in the context of complex non-linear dynamics. Practical application of these tools to physical systems on the atomistic or molecular scale is also part of our research agenda.

The goal of the research project will be to extract reduced models using a combination of robust machine learning approaches with physics-based modeling techniques.

Requirements

We are looking to hire a graduate-level student. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in stochastic analysis and/or statistical learning and optimization. An interest in physics or physical modeling is also appreciated. Applicants with a background in physics and a strong interest in method development are also welcome. The willingness and competence to work in an international environment is expected.

The payment and benefits for this research work follows the guidelines of the collective agreement for the public service (75% E13 TVöD-Bund).
