Job Code: MSD_2020/36

Job offer from July 08, 2020

The Molecular Simulations and Design Group (Hon.-Prof. Dr. Matthias Stein) at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (m/f/d) for the topic “Machine Learning for Cancer Therapy”. The Salary follows the public sector TVöD (Salary Class E13).

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, limited to one year and may be extended upon mutual agreement.

The Molecular Simulations and Design Group (MSD) develops and applies methods in computational chemistry and biology which enable the investigation of complex chemical and biological processes at the molecular level.  Multi-scale simulations span orders of magnitude in spatial and time dimensions and give detailed insight into reaction mechanisms and intermolecular interactions.

In this project, vector representations of small molecules that act as inhibitors against cancer targets will be used to train a representative subset. Neural networks and algorithms from machine learning will be applied to generate new candidate structures for a new target. In a collaboration with the medical faculty those will be tested in vitro.

We are recruiting a candidate with a PhD in

  • Theoretical Chemistry/Computational Chemistry
  • Bioinformatics/Computational Biology
  • Computational Physics

Experience in scientific programming (C, C++, python) and machine learning algorithms is required. For scientific inquiries please contact Dr Stein

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems is a site of top-class research with close scientific exchange with national and international research teams.  It offers payment and benefits in accordance with the wage agreement for the public service (TVöD) with health insurance and social benefits.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Please, send your application documents before 1st September 2020 as a single pdf, including CV and names of three academic references, by e-mail to
