Mathematical modeling plays a crucial role in analyzing and understanding biological systems. Even in well-established culture systems for manufacturing of biologicals there is much to be learned about the molecular biological properties of production cell lines, the dynamics of cell growth and product formation, and the complex interaction of cells with their physicochemical environment in a bioreactor. Combined with results from extensive experimental investigations ranging from the cellular to the bioprocess level, mathematical models not only support the detailed analysis of the systems' behavior, but also the design and optimization of the overall process.
