The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in cooperation with Robert Bosch GmbH offer a  Master Thesis with the topic "Parameter Identification for Uncertainty Quantification“.


To certify products to meet, for example safety regulations, the uncertainties and their propagation have to be quantified for the product as a whole. This process is called uncertainty quantification

  • The quantification of uncertainties encompasses determining effects of uncertain measurements, materials or forcing on the products properties
  • A recent approach to unify and automate this process is the treatment of uncertainties as parameters to the underlying model and perform a data-driven parameter identification on the uncertain parameters based on empirical Gramian matrices
  • Furthermore, to compute compound uncertainty distributions from measurement data, the so-called inverse problem, this parameter identification can be recycled to reduce the relevant parameter space and hence accelerate the inversion
  • This master thesis involves the theoretical description and practical implementation of the uncertainty quantification based on recent research publications for a real-life product


  • Master student of computer science, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering or related fields
  • Knowledge in statistics, linear algebra and inverse problems
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently
  • Fluent English or German
